Prison Cell, black paint, screw driver, 2009
Holding cell at former Exeter Crown Court, Rougemont Castle, Exeter. The picture is based on an early 19th century engraving of Bicton House near Exeter. I painted the prison cell black, then scratched out the pastoral motive with a screwdriver. The work folds a panoramic vision of a pastoral idyll into confinement whilst introducing some of the court room’s aesthetic into the prison cell underneath.
